Bedene was crowned champion on the final day of the tournament after winning a super tiebreak 13-11 against Paulo Andujar earlier in the week. The tournament, which took a strong fielded round robin format, saw Pablo Andujar and Aljaz Bedene tied with two wins and one loss. As a result, the new Brit was crowned champion.
In his final match earlier today, Bedene beat 17 year old rising Russian star Andrey Rublev in a power display of serving aces.
The other two players matching forces today were world number 36 Pablo Andujar from Spain and Bosnia´s Damir Dzumhur.
Speaking after his victory, Bedene said “I am very proud to be a winner at Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament. It’s been a fantastic event and I am now feeling much more confident for Wimbledon.”
Anders Borg, Tournament Director, said “It was a great win from Aljaz in a very competitive tournament.”
Bedene is second only to Andy Murray in the UK rankings. While top 100 ATP players traditionally head to the Queen’s Club to prepare for Wimbledon, Bedene decided to head north to Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament.
Match format today was superset, being the first player to reach eight games in one set.
These are the results of the men´s championship playoffs Sunday 21st of June:
Andrey Rublev (RUS) vs. Aljaz Bedene (GBR): 5-8
Damir Dzumhur (BIH) vs. Pablo Andújar (ESP): 5-8
