Madrid Open semi-finalist Pablo Andujar set to appear at Liverpool International tennis tournament
The latest ‘unknown’ snapped up by Liverpool International Tennis organisers has already shot into the public consciousness – before he has even swung a racket at Calderstones Park!
Event coordinator Anders Borg, who has previously showcased superstars like Novak Djokovic, Caroline Wozniacki, Bernard Tomic and Laura Robson before they soared up the world rankings, signed rising Spanish star Pablo Andujar a month ago.
And he was thrilled to see the 27-year-old reach the semi-finals of the Madrid Open this week where he lost to Rafael Nadal.
Borg said: “We usually see out signings rise to prominence after they have played at Calderstones Park, but Pablo is in a rich vein of form right now.
On his way to the semi-finals in Spain he defeated Marin Cilic, John Isner, Daniel Gimeno-Traver and the 14th seed Kei Nishikori.
“I’m sure the Merseyside fans will enjoy seeing him play.”
Andujar is currently ranked 54 on the ATP Tour and was as high as 33 last year.
He has finished in the top 100 for three consecutive seasons and won successive ATP titles in Casablanca in 2011 and 2012.
Already pencilled in for next month’s tournament are the last British ladies Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade, the evergreen Fabrice Santoro, Younes El Alynaoui and Wimbledon doubles champion Anders Jarryd and Peter McNamara.
Leading up to the largest tennis exhibition in Europe a three week Festival of Tennis will kick-off on May 28, aiming to encourage wider participation in the sport
